Now a proud member of the Actor’s Guild, Catherine Zeta-Jones continued the stage role of Peggy Sawyer for two years before trying opera at the Coliseum Theatre for 1989’s Street Scene. As a result of her newfound fame in the UK, Zeta-Jones also anchored a series of musical singles, including “For All Time” and “True Love Ways,” which cracked the Top 40 of the UK charts in 1992 and 1994 respectively. The film was a flop, but her next role in the TV miniseries Titanic got the attention of Steven Spielberg, who suggested her for a part in director Martin Campbell’s 1998 film, The Mask of Zorro -- a movie that Spielberg was producing. Cast as the title character’s smoldering love interest, Elena, Zeta-Jones used dancing and swashbuckling swagger to win the hearts of audiences, and, as a result, she found herself immediately in demand. New roles followed in the heist thriller Entrapment with Sean Connery, the horror remake The Haunting with Liam Neeson and Owen Wilson, and High Fidelity with John Cusack. In the wake of her high-profile off-screen romance with Michael Douglas, her next role in 2000’s Traffic -- which also costarred her husband -- proved to be a critical breakthrough, and she was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her role as the scheming pregnant wife of a drug kingpin.
