Vikramditya Motwane was always fascinated by this story and wrote Lootera even before Udaan. But the premise of the short story was not enough for a feature-film adaptation, so Motwane wrote a whole new first-half for the film while the romantic second half of the film is based on The Last Leaf. Producer Vikas Bahl says, “Yes, Lootera is based on O’Henry’s story. It’s a beautiful touching story and Vikramaditya has fleshed it out beautifully.” Sonakshi Sinha’s character is said to be based on the female protagonist in the short story, and from that, we guess probably Ranveer Singh gets to play the good neighbour who saves her life.
